Difficult Topics to Write

Postby Jenna » Tue Mar 06, 2012 2:01 am

I just wrote what is hands-down my most difficult scene yet...and cried like a baby as I was writing the end of it.
Why?
Because I had to write the death of a beloved figment.

I know I'm not the only one out there who has characters that die. And since writing that put me in a mood, I'm throwing a pity-party. :needhug:

How has writing the death of a Figment affected you?
If you haven't written such a scene, how has reading about the death of a character you love affected you?
And what are some other difficult things to write?

((It's up on my dA, if you want to read))
"Xena: I never dreamed that we'd be distanced by a hate
That all the trust we had would go

Gabrielle: How could I hate you
Xena: How could it come to pass?
This awful twist of fate

Gabrielle: How could I hurt you
Xena: This madness can't be so
Gabrielle: I can't believe it
Xena: I never dreamed that any barriers could rise
Gabrielle: Or that I'd ever see the stranger in your eyes
Xena: Our hearts were hurting both the same
Gabrielle: The hurt was tearing up our souls
Xena: The fury in us made us blind
Gabrielle: We could not see beyond the pain
Xena: If we can turn again to love
Gabrielle: If we can heal these open wounds
Xena: We'll leave this hatred far behind
Gabrielle: So not a trace of hate remains
Both: We'll overcome our damaged past
And we'll grow stronger side by side
To stand together through the storms
We're safe ‘cause love will be our guide"

I hate writing fighting.
And recently I was writing and suddenly Casp was keeping herself alive long enough to say goodbye to Kowari and their kid and then she was dead... and I was reading what I wrote, wondering what just happened..

Difficult for me is... anything romantic, or... smutty. (and that is the closest I can come to actually saying the word.) Fight scenes are pretty hard too, and any time a character's just going through a normal day. Unless hey have a really interesting life, I suppose...

I have a hard time writing smut too. I can do it...but I don't like to. I think my Figments are the sort that don't enjoy sharing the more...intimate aspects of their relationships. Well, at least not with others. They seem to have no problem talking with me about it, but just don't want me writing it down.
Which I am MORE than okay with.

I don't like writing smut. I'm just not that good at it. Reading is another story though.

One of the most difficult scenes I ever had to write was Kalle getting the mother of all emotional breakdowns. Considering that, of all my figments, he is the one that is the most like me, it hit really close to home. At the same time, it was a bit therapeutic, because it felt like I was getting a lot of bottled negative emotions out of my chest.

But bow did I cry too after I finished writing.

Anytime any of my figments cry, you can pretty much be sure that I'm bawling, too. Especially in RP sessions.

Syn: Wait... are you crying?
Me: Y-yes..! *sniffle* Have been for the past half hour.
Syn: OMG! :wince:

I have any difficulty writing verbal fights (not physical ones, those are easy). They tend to develop into very long, drawn out arguments back and forth with little or no progression in them (just like real life? : P). Romance is hard, too.

One specific thing I have is that sometimes, characters that are not philosophically inclined get philosophical anyway, simply because I tend to get philosophical myself. I can be very hard to beat back all the abstract thinking inside, and let the character be him/herself.

I haven't had to kill off any major characters yet. It's going to be pretty inevitable, though. There are some which I just can't imagine dying, though. They have so firmly embedded themselves in my mind that it's impossible for them to die (undead exceptions excluded).

I have a hard time writing anything romantic (anything...smutty...is out of the question)- probably because of my complete lack of RL experience in that area. And my few romantically involved figments don't talk about it that much (or deny involvment altogether). The other hard thing for me to write are the normal (non-action, non-drama/trauma) parts- which either tend to be far too short or far to long/rambling. One of the hardest scenes I've had to write so far was Lyssa introducing Aurora to some (completely normal) acquaintances of hers. They got along just fine...but it was just too normal for me to write...even if it is important to the story...
My sanity's on vacation- if you have a message, please leave it with the figments.

"Light and Shadow reside in everyone, and no matter how overwhelming one of them, the other can never be gotten rid of." -Aulira
"When the feeling of revulsion at the act of killing is lost, the heart has begun to harden. It is a road no one should walk down, because it destroys emotions, humanity, and in the end, the whole self." -Soressa

I can't write smut, even after being in a marriage. >_<; It's just... I dunno. My main character has biological kids (four, to be exact), and ... Well... I redden anytime I think of HOW they got there. X___X;

[ ...Why, yes. I am prude. Haha. x.x; ]

I think that's the only problem with writing I have. I can handle death and fight scenes.

...Come to think of it, I wrote smut once, and someone reported it on the LJ community, "fanficrants." That's how bad I am at writing it. XD

I am now curious about that rant. I wonder if I can find it in the archives. XD
